Tom Young assumed command of the USS Manley (DD-940) Association
August 1, 2007 relieving Joe Dennison who founded the organization and
then spent seven years at its helm. Dan Brewster will carry-on as vice-
president; Joe will tak e over the treasurer’s job; and Mike Haynes will be-
come Association secretary.
Only the office of the president was up for grabs w hen volunteers - self-
nominees - for the subordinate positions were “elected” by default.
Mr. Young, who resides with his wife Barbara in Lancaster, PA, and who
served as FTG3 from 1967 until 1968, was opposed by Larry Lutz of Port
Crane, N Y who served as an QM3 from 1957 until 1959. Both candidates as
well as the other volunteers are to be congratulated for their willingness to
sacrifice their time, effort, and talent to the future and preservation of the
USS Manley (DD-940) Association.
Ballots were distributed by e-mail and snail mail to all current active mem-
bers to be returned by the July 7th deadline to Harold Kane, the sitting sec-
retary. After his count, the ballot records were transmitted to the sitting
president, Joe Dennison, who certified the election res ults.
In addition to his duties as treasurer, Joe Dennison will remain the chairman
of the reunion committee as well as editor of Manle y Notes. Dan Brewster
will continue to manage the ship’s store and Mike Haynes will assume mem-
bership duties.

Acceptance
I learned on Saturday, July 7th, that I had been elected to serve as president
effective August 1st.
I cannot begin to tell you how overwhelmed I was when I received the news. It is
truly an honor, and it will be both a privilege and a pleasure to serve you in this
capacity. I will strive to preside with honesty, integrity, pride and enthusiasm as I
oversee the continuation and advancement of this great organization along the
path originally envisioned by Joe Dennison when he took his idea and turned it
into reality.
I sincerely thank everyone who participated in the election process. As a team,
we can work together to keep the USS Manley (DD-940) Association the best
unit of its kind and a source of pride by its membership.
By following in Joe’s footsteps we shall maintain the principles and philosophies
on which he founded the organization and we will enjoy success. I am certain
that each of us will continue to savor the lasting friendships and memories that
the Manley Association has presented to all of us.
Thank you very much!
Thomas A. Young
President
